Silicon Valley ou Vale do Silício, em português, é uma referência ao elemento químico Silício (Si), que é matéria prima básica na produção de circuitos e chips eletrônicos.

Na Califórnia, Estados Unidos. A região é composta por varias cidades como Palo Alto, Santa Clara, San José, Campbell, Cupertino, Fremont, Los Altos, Los Gatos, Menlo Park, Mountain View, Milpitas, Newark, Redwood City, Saratoga, Sunnyvale e Union City.
Quando iniciou e qual era o objetivo?
Foi em 1950 que o local começou a se desenvolver com o objetivo de gerar e fomentar inovações no campo cientifico e tecnológico.
O que impulsionou a região?
A segunda guerra mundial e a Guerra Fria, devido a necessidade de produzir armas e construir aviões de caça. Foram as empresas lá instaladas que forneceram todo o material necessário. Ao longo do tempo, mais empresas foram se instalando na região por causa dos benefícios fiscais e como consequência, atraindo mais universidades, o que foi criando um círculo de educação, pesquisa e tecnologia de ponta.

A maioria das empresas do vale são de eletrônica, informática e componentes eletrônicos. Podemos citar como exemplos algumas famosas como: Apple, Facebook, WhatsApp , Google, Twitter , Yahoo!, Ebay, HP, Intel e Microsoft, Dell, além da Adobe e Oracle.
